Sulphur is a yellow-green chemical element with a characteristic odor, solid at room temperature. It can be obtained by extraction from natural mines located in volcanic areas or through petrochemical processes. The sulphur marketed by Ecopetrol is of petrochemical origin. It is obtained through the catalytic oxidation of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from gases produced by catalytic cracking or hydrotreating plants. Sulphur obtained by this method is of high purity.
Its main application is the production of sulphuric acid, oleum, and their derivatives (sulfates, sulfites, sulfides, etc.). It is also used directly in rubber vulcanization, in the manufacture of certain types of steel, and in the production of fertilizers and fungicides.
